Headlines That Make Headlines: Nike
On Labor Day, Nike dropped an ad featuring former NFL star Colin Kaepernick as part of their ongoing “Voices” campaign that also features Serena Williams and Shaquem Griffin. The ad immediately sparked reaction on social media, sports media, and news media. Their social media mentions increased 135%. Nike has never shied away from taking positions on social issues and appears to be comfortable being at the center of a tenuous American debate. Though their stock took a slight dip (as did Puma and Adidas stock), they must feel they won’t be burned in the long term. Nike, also a partner of the NFL, will air commercials featuring Kaepernick during today’s season opener.
